"Tired" (tired)

My 13 year old son just got a PS3 for his birthday from the grandparents. Myself, I don’t know squat about game consoles, games, or their pros and cons. But if it’s plugged in here, seems like it ought to have a driving game, right?
No steering wheel attachments, just the controller it came with (though I’m not opposed to craigslisting one somewhere if this catches on), so does the oppo family have a good place for me to start? Any to avoid?

PS3? Hmm, I would say Gran Tourismo 5 but I think a lot of the online support got pulled. The main game without the online component is good though. Should be a able to pick it up pretty cheap these days.

Everyone’s going to say Gran Turismo. Screw that. Get Ridge Racer 7 and relive the launch of a console with mediocre rushed-to-market titles that have none of the polish or content levels of games from later in the generation. Bonus points if you find someone to play this online with you.

Gran Turismo 6 work with this? We used to play 5, but now our PS3 is a bluray player pretty much exclusively.

Burnout Paradise, it’s a bit old but it’s great. From PS exclusives there’s Motorstorm series, I’ve played the first one and it was ok iirc.

I wish EA had never brought Criterion. We are in desperate need of another Burnout game, and we’re never going to get one.

Gran Turismo 6, Midnight Club LA (super fun free roam), Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (great visuals and pretty easy good sound too), Burnout Paradise, Need For Speed Most Wanted. That should be a solid start

Any of the burnout games, Not sure if Burnout revenge was released on the PS3, but it was on PS2, Xbox and 360
Any of the Need for Speed games as well, those are quite popular, not sure how well they go with the family rules though, as they’re ‘banned’ in my household.
Any of the Gran Turismo games, Ridge racer.. Motorstorm is a blast actually, I often play Motorstorm: Pacific Rift when Im at a friend’s.

Seriously.
Burnout Revenge, with the ability to check traffic, was the most exciting racing game I have ever played.

Gran Turismo 6 and Burnout Paradise are the two best, by far.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn’t thought about police chases, but that just shows I’ve more to learn.

Did you have a bluray player before the PS3?

Everyone else has said it, but it’s worth repeating. Gran Turismo 5 or 6 (6 is technologically better and has more cars+tracks, but it lost some nice content from 5 like the track creator, unless they patched that in since I left). GT4 on the PS2 was what got me into car culture to begin with, and without that game I sure as hell wouldn’t be browsing Oppo right now. I’ve grown distant from console gaming over the years, but Gran Turismo still holds a very dear place in my heart.
Also, the GT games are perfectly playable on a DS3 controller, but you benefit immensely from a good wheel if you can afford to get one. I don’t know what your budget is, but a Logitech G27 (~$260 new) is pretty much the gold standard for racing wheels.

Also quick note which may make choosing easier:
If he prefers realistic racing Gran Turismo 6 would suit him better
If he prefers arcade/action racing then Burnout Paradise would be a better match.
